It is reported that family spend only 49 minutes a day together. Most parents are busy working and do house chores until they spend less quality time with their own children, whereas children rush their school homework. The bonding between parents and children becomes far apart. Parents are finding ways to enhance relationship with their beloved children.
My name is Carol who is an educator for the past 4 years, ever teaching in rural and urban schools. I realise that the students from rural areas expose more to nature but those from the cities tend to get addicted with electrical devices, such as laptop and mobile phones, thus induced in games and social medias. Rural students are eager to learn as they are curious about the environment around them.
Therefore, I wish to educate children and parents to connect with natural environment, as well as sparking their curiosity and eagerness to learn with nature.
Tour Edu is a platform connecting local natural / ecotourism spots to parents, children and educational institutions during holidays via education tours.
Our Vision : Nourishing individuals through experiential learning with nature.
Our Mission: Connecting 100 local natural / ecotourism spots to 1000 parents and children by December 2018.
Nowadays, as children may have less exposure in outdoor activities, my friend and I, who are nature lovers and always joining ecotourism events, would like to refer parents and children back to the nature. How glad it is when they can expose themselves to nature by visiting the farms. It is not in a movie where children just witnessed the farm tours digitally.
The Farm Tour Project :
During the weekends or holidays, visit an organic farm where we have a precious family bonding time for 3- 4 hours. We take a farm tour and learn how the farm works; from basic soil science to harvest ribena, carrots, peanuts or tasting the fresh organic food.
From the sharings from parents and children, they are excited until they would like to join next tour again. Here are some of the testimonials:
“ After my kids back from the tour, they ever left food waste but this time the plate is cleaned without leftover on it. ”
“ My kids are excited and always ask us when we will visit the nature again.”
“ We choose to educate our children at home and engage more time to outdoor activities rather than an working adult. ”
Mr Akata, our tour educator, was an engineer who gave up his job to educate people about nature and encourage to reduce the amount of waste.
Tour educator, Akata Yang:
1. Why would you become an educator for parents and children to get closer to the nature?
There was a case from my teaching experience, a child of one of the parents complained to the school, asking why their child cannot throw away the waste, which fruit peels was used to do enzyme. And that was the moment when I realise the importance in educating parents and children at the same time to really create impacts on the environment and nature.
Mr Akata has the passion to educate children the importance of ecological balance and build organic farms. (an article from newspaper)
2. Why is experiential learning important during tours?
I still remember during one of the school tours, I asked one of the students, ‘Do you think leaves are rough or smooth?’ They answered confidentially, ‘Yes, of course. It’s smooth! The books are all written like that.’
From here, we know that hands-on learning experiences to connect children with nature is really important as they study about natural environment in books but they seldom see the real objects like chicken and various shapes of leaves. During tours, children are excited when they can hear, smell, taste and even touch the real leaves.
Build awareness about our vision and mission
Empower youth by providing hands-on environmental experiential learning
Inspire youth and communities to become agents of change for their environment and nature

Tour Edu
Akata Yang:
Akata
